A boutique Abaya store designed by Studio Nama for Fashion designer May AlDaihani, embodies a philosophy of bold movement and the inherent beauty of raw materials through a minimalistic approach. Inspired by the fluid dynamics of fabric, the design captures the essence of how fabric moves and folds, creating a space that is both functional and artistically compelling.

The store features a veneered burled wood curved wall that serves dual purposes as a backdrop for the cashier and a partition between the welcoming public showroom and a more private lounge and changing area. This architectural element creates a flow that guides customers from the public space into the secluded space of the changing area, nestled between massive curtains and a wood partition that intrigue and invite.

The project celebrates raw materials, from the burled wood to the rough-edged floating marble counter. Each element is meticulously chosen to add richness to the space while maintaining a minimalist ethos. The materials not only complement each other but also serve to spotlight the Abaya designs, making them the focal points of the space.

Specific lighting choices were made to highlight the Abayas first and the space interiors second, ensuring that the products stand out against the designed interiors. Floor-to-ceiling curtains define the back entrance zone, enhancing the space’s openness and fluidity while allowing for privacy as needed.

A distinctive feature of the MAY boutique is its innovative storefront design, which incorporates four revolving curved fins. These architectural elements are finished with a textured rammed earth effect, giving them a unique and organic appearance that resonates with the store’s emphasis on natural beauty and simplicity. Designed to be fully adjustable, these fins can be positioned to either open up the space to the public or create a more mysterious and private storefront, depending on the needs of the day or the specific preferences of the client. This flexibility is crucial in allowing the boutique to adapt to different events and customer interactions, providing a dynamic and versatile face to the bustling streets of Shuwaikh.
