Located in the Shuwaikh Industrial District, CRO Shuwaikh is the flagship branch of CRO bakery and represents a new approach to the open bakery concept. The project sits within a district that’s steadily transforming into one of Kuwait’s main cultural and creative hubs. Its industrial setting naturally complements the bakery’s raw, crafted identity; providing a context where design, production, and everyday life overlap.

At 145 square meters, the space was designed by Studio Nama as a transparent and functional environment that highlights the process of baking as part of the customer experience. The open kitchen, positioned behind a glass enclosure, is fully visible from all angles. Guests can watch dough being shaped, layered, and baked throughout the day, reinforcing the brand’s values of honesty and craftsmanship.

The design intent was to create a young and contemporary interpretation of the open bakery; one that celebrates materials and the sensory qualities of baking. The concept takes direct inspiration from butter, the foundation of the brand’s product and identity. The design translates the colors and textures of butter into architectural elements: the coffee bar is wrapped in butter-yellow tiles with a soft, folded geometry, while the bakery walls are clad in deep brown tiles and brushed stainless steel, referencing the contrast between melted and browned butter. Together, these surfaces establish a clear and consistent design language throughout the space.

The material palette remains consistent with the brand’s visual identity. Warm tones of walnut and maroon are combined with blue upholstery to balance richness and lightness. The custom stacked cushion banquette subtly references the idea of layering found in pastry making, translating the brand’s process into spatial detail. The mixture of textures; tile, wood, stainless steel, and fabric creates a balance between crafted precision and casual comfort.

The ceiling composition reinforces this spatial hierarchy. Over the bakery zone, a lower wooden ceiling provides a sense of enclosure and warmth, while the higher painted ceiling above the seating area opens the space vertically, improving scale and natural light distribution. This transition not only defines different functional zones but also enhances the overall rhythm and depth of the interior.

Lighting is used to emphasize the contrast between work and leisure. The bakery area is lit with directional lighting that highlights the activity within, while the seating area is softly illuminated to create a calmer and more intimate environment. Natural daylight plays a significant role, especially through the open facade, which keeps the space bright during the day and visually connected to the surrounding industrial street.

The spatial layout is organized around a simple and engaging customer flow. Upon entry, visitors are greeted by a modular stainless-steel pastry display, made of brick-shaped units that can be reconfigured to accommodate different layouts and seasonal products. Directly opposite, the coffee bar anchors the central axis of the space, creating an immediate connection between production and service. From there, guests move down two steps into the seating area, where the ceiling height increases and the atmosphere becomes more relaxed. This lower level extends outdoors through a full-height folding facade, connecting to a gravel courtyard that offers additional seating.

The outdoor area functions as an extension of the interior. Surrounded by potted plants that form a soft boundary from the street, it offers a lounge-like setting with a mix of low and dining seating. The open facade allows both spaces to merge, expanding the capacity of the café and blurring the line between indoor and outdoor activity.

CRO Shuwaikh’s design reflects the evolution of its urban context. As Shuwaikh Industrial continues to transform from a production district into a creative hub, the bakery fits seamlessly into this shift — maintaining its raw industrial character while introducing a refined and approachable design language. The project demonstrates how architectural clarity and brand storytelling can merge within a compact footprint to create a distinctive, memorable experience.
